As an EQUS member, you have three choices when it comes to your energy supplier:

  1. EQUS' Co-operative Energy Rate Contract: Under the Co-operative Energy Rate contract, EQUS will supply energy for five years commencing January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2025.
  2. Competitive (Contract) Retail Option: If you choose this option, you will purchase energy through a contract with a licensed competitive retailer who has registered with EQUS. To choose from a list of licensed, competitive retailers, please visit www.ucahelps.alberta.ca
  3. Regulated Rate Option: You may choose to receive a regulated energy rate through the Regulated Rate Option (RRO). Please note, the RRO fluctuates month-to-month. If you do not sign a contract with a competitive electricity retailer or EQUS’ Co-operative Energy Rate contract, you will automatically be defaulted to the RRO.

For additional information, please contact the Main Office toll-free at 1.888.211.4011.

All members are free to purchase electricity services through EQUS' regulated rate tariff or from a retailer of their choice. The delivery of electricity to you is not affected by your choice. If you change who you purchase electricity services from, you will continue receiving electricity from EQUS. For a current list of retailers you may choose from, visit http://www.ucahelps.alberta.ca or call 310-4822 (toll free in Alberta).

Regulated Rate Option (RRO)

The Regulated Rate Option (RRO) is available to residential, farm, and small business consumers who use than 250,000 kWh/year. The RRO fluctuates monthly and is determined using a process approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission. All consumers have a choice to enter into a contract with a competitive retailer or remain on the RRO. If a consumer is not signed up with a competitive retailer they will receive the RRO.

EQUS Terms and Conditions of Electric Distribution Service

This rider is temporary, and came into effect for all Alberta households as of November 1, 2021.

In response to the financial hardship and uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Utility Payment Deferral Program (UPDP) was enacted by the Alberta government. This program allowed Albertans to defer payment of their electricity and natural gas bills from March 18, 2020 to June 18, 2020. Participation in the UPDP was compulsory for all natural gas and electricity providers.

This program allowed consumers who deferred electricity and natural gas bills a one-year repayment period, which ended June 18, 2021, and all natural gas and electricity providers were required to allow repayment during this period. For those amounts uncollected during the UPDP repayment period, in August 2021 the Alberta government and the Alberta Utilities Commission mandated that all natural gas and electric utilities add a charge, or rate rider, to their electricity bills to recover the uncollected amounts incurred from the deferral period. This rider is to be in place until the balance of deferred payments is collected.

This charge is known as Rate Rider L, and is made pursuant to section 11 of the Utility Payment Deferral Program Act and section 4 of the Utility Payment Deferral Program Regulation.

Beginning November 1, 2021, each household is expected to pay on average less than a dollar extra each month ($0.00043/kWh) to cover the unpaid utility bills amassed during the deferral period of the UPDP.

If you have concerns or questions regarding the Utility Payment Deferral Program or associated rider please contact your local MLA and/or the Alberta Ministry of Energy. If you have questions about your bill please call your Member Service Administrator at 1.888.211.4011.
