Why Become an EQUS Member?

We are Alberta’s rural power experts. EQUS is Canada’s largest member-owned utility. We don’t work for investors; we work for our members. We don’t generate profits for international stockholders; we keep money in rural Alberta. We can serve businesses, homes, farms, subdivisions, oil and gas developments and more.

Competitive Rates

EQUS provides direct economic benefits to our members and the rural communities that we serve. By operating under a co-operative business model, we saved our member-owners $13.1 million in 2023. Our team will work with you to determine the most cost-effective plan to meet your specific needs.

Rural-Based Power Experts

EQUS is a 100% Alberta owned and rural-based electrical distribution co-operative. We operate offices in Innisfail, Claresholm, Medicine Hat and Onoway, with our Corporate Office located in Innisfail.

As the rural power experts, our staff will work with you on your project from start to finish assessing your requirements, reviewing the anticipated load profile, providing cost estimates and providing and facilitating the construction and installation to meet your needs. EQUS is committed to meeting your project timelines.

Industry Leader

EQUS and other Rural Electrification Associations (REAs) set the benchmark for electricity rates in rural Alberta because we provide electrical distribution services at cost. Since EQUS operates under a not-for-profit, co-operative business model, we are able to focus on delivering safe and reliable service for our members, and not on generating profits for stakeholders.

Safe and Reliable

Based on recognized industry tracking, EQUS’ system reliability is over 99.9 per cent. Staff are certified industry professionals, who are committed to operating a safe, reliable electrical distribution service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The construction and maintenance of EQUS’ electrical distribution system meets and exceeds all Alberta Electrical Utility Code requirements.

Invested in our Community

EQUS has several programs that distribute funds back into the communities we serve. In 2021 EQUS staff and EQUS members raised over $80,000 for rural initiatives. Operation Round Up, the EQUS Community Connection and a sponsorship and donation program endeavour to support organizations that support rural youth and seniors or encourage community development within our Service Area. In addition, we host an annual charity golf tournament and an employee charity committee organizes numerous fundraising events to support charities throughout Alberta.

Dedicated to our Member-Owners

We are committed to delivering a high level of personalized service to our 12,000 members. In 2021, our member satisfaction rate was over 96 per cent!

Have Your Say

As a co-op, EQUS is committed to involving our member-owners. Each year, EQUS welcomes our members to events such as Member Input Sessions and Annual General Meetings where the CEO and Board of Directors seek members' input on the strategic direction and initiatives for the year and share annual reports, financials, and program information. Members are also invited to fun, family-friendly events such as summer barbecues, pancake breakfasts, Family Fun Days and Member Skating Events. When you're part of a co-op, your voice matters, and we welcome member input.

Members are free to purchase electricity services from a retailer of their choice. For a list of retailers, visit http://www.ucahelps.alberta.ca or call 310.4822 (toll free in Alberta).
